Q&A with Kaya-Line Knust,
General Manager of Stop the Water While Using Me
Q: What makes you stand out?
A: We all know that water is the essence of life, and yet we still waste this precious resource every single day. This is why we’ve decided to develop the first organic cosmetic range that encourages people to save water with a clear appeal: Stop The Water While Using Me! Our packaging is refillable and reminds people all over the world with its simple message to contribute to the intelligent use of our resources. Our cosmetics are made from only the best ingredients, all of them containing organically-certified ingredients and entirely free from silicones, parabens and other mineral-oil based raw materials. Also our products are 100% biodegradable – which means that we also contribute to a natural water cycle. We choose our suppliers and ingredients very carefully and only work with the best organic traders. Some of them for example work on sustainable projects. But for us it is not only important to save water, but also to donate water. As there are still one billion people who have no access to clean and safe drinking water, we launched our initiative Good Water Projects to provide lasting solutions all over the world that provide fresh and clean drinking water where it is needed most.
Q: Why do you care?
A: Because water is one of the most important things in life! As Thales von Milet, a greek philosopher, said: “Water is the principle of all things; water is everything and everything returns to water“. That’s why we want to draw people’s attention to a conscious use of that resource, especially in countries, which fight with droughts and water scarcity. Also because saving water is not only about water, but also about saving energy – hot water uses energy and water purification uses energy too. It is important to deal with these issues and to be aware that you can achieve great things by small changes in your daily routine.
Q: Is being responsible good for business?
A: It is good to help remind people to save water or think about their water consumption and although it is maybe a small thing, if everybody participates it will have a big impact. Above all, we want to enhance our customers’ environmental awareness but not be dogmatic, so we don’t issue commands but treat our customers as equals. And we receive a lot of positive feedback. They say that they do actually rethink and change their behaviours because of us. This makes us more than happy!
Q: Has the business changed you?
A: I have always followed a holistic and sustainable path in my professional and in my private life. But since I started working for Stop The Water While Using Me! I have had the chance to be part of projects with greater impact than only my private sustainable behaviour. For example our first Good Water Project in 2014, where we built fog nets in Tanzania in cooperation with a small NGO. One of those nets can filter up to 1,000 litres of drinking water out of the fog every day for over 10 years. This is quite an impressive sustainable change and we were a part of it! But I also believe that everyone can be part of a change for the better; you just have to rethink your routine and try to be aware with every step we take that we only have this one world. Treat it as you want to be treated.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love our good water projects initiative and really achieving an impact each and every day. But I also love the feedback from our customers who do change their behaviour in terms of water usage. I can actually not think of anything about my job which I don’t like.
Q: Plans for the future?
A: To undertake more Good Water Projects. Grow bigger to be able to change more in this world for the better. Convince more people to be sustainable and choose the environmentally friendly option.
